It seems that Censorship is becoming a big issue in the online world. The latest to run afoul of censorship by a corporation is Sony’s “HOME” for the PS3.
Like it’s other counterparts, they are seeing growth pangs due to censoring the online community. Words such as “gay,” lesbian,” “bi-sexual,” and “Jew” and other words have been banned and is filtered out from text chats.
Xbox Live had similar issues when they censored words they deemed offensive.
I can understand the corporate view point that they do not want to be sued for having offensive comments, which should not be a corporations fault for offering a service where free speech should not be censored but by the parents who should be monitoring and guiding their children.
It’s just much easier to hold someone else liable instead of themselves and a corporation has to worry because that is exactly what is happening but they also get blamed for banning certain words deemed offensive by some individuals. I also believe that the people online should respect the online community and self-censor themselves instead. I wouldn’t want a nine year old hearing offensive words or talk of explicit materials by an adult that doesn’t care that a kid could be hearing it.
Hopefully, Sony and the PS3 community will find a way to work out the censorship issues.
