Sony Trademarks Name PS Cloud

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has recently trademarked the name “PS Cloud” with the US Patent and Trademark and people are speculating what Sony has in mind for the trademarked name.

The rumors are that Sony will use the name for their version of Valve’s Steamcloud or OnLive System which will let you host games and game saves on outside servers. The technology is already used by the PSP to control games and films on the PS3 remotely so it might just be an extension to what we can already do.

Sony tells Joystiq: No PS3 Price Drop

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Consumers and business analysts have been expecting Sony to drop price on their PS3 consoles to better compete with their rivals Nintendo and Microsoft. Sony has always said to the effects of “We don’t comment on speculations” or “We’re focused on long-term profits.

However, in an announcement made to Joystiq today, they have officially made an announcement saying, “We do not have plans for a PS3 price drop, and any rumors to that effect are false and are the result of speculation.”

Sony making an announcement to several blogs the day before they are expected to make a major announcement has me wondering what Sony has in mind.

Off course, one announcement will probably be about virtual ads or “dynamic in-game” advertising in future games as mentioned in a previous post. This is due to MLB (Major League Baseball) 09 The Show being the first disc-based PS3 game to have advertisements in their games.

Video Game Makers Sees Change In Game Market

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

Video game makers are seeing a less profitable future and they are looking at ways to turn a profit.

While companies are taking in more money, the cost of development and marketing has risen almost double the cost of what it might have been several years back.

At a usual price of $60 a game, the money made from the sale is not enough to cover the cost of covering development, licensing fee to console makers, marketing, as well as the merchants’ cut. They need to sell at least one million copies to make a profit but most companies sell about 150,000 copies on the average.

Right now, with so many choices for consumers to choose from, from phones, pc, game consoles, they are seeing less interest in the consumers for high priced games as consumers are going for cheap or free games…

The companies are keeping track of what is going on and options are being considered, but the one option I think we will see more in future games will be ad-supported games as well ads in the games that we play.

Wii Control The Xbox 360

Friday, March 27th, 2009

For those that have envied the Wii control remote, Xbox 360 players will have something better.

Performance Designed Products will release the Gametrak Freedom this coming fall. The Gametrak Freedom will use what they call ultrasonic 3D Positioning.  Unlike the Nintendo Wiimote, the Gametrak Freedom will use two sensors that the player will place between the display to measure the motion movement of the remote and will be more accurate than the IR based Wii remote.

Expect the Gametrak Freedom for Xbox 360 this fall and the Playstation 3 version in 2010.

Sony PS3 Development Kit Price Reduced For Developers

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Sony has had a lot of issues with sales of the PS3 as well as game releases, with Microsoft Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii outselling the PS3 in the US market.

Sony had decided to drop the cost of the Sony PS3 Development kit from the cost of $20,000 to $10,000 back in 2007.

The drop in the development kit wasn’t big enough of a drop as now it seems that Sony is offering the kit for $2000. The cost is cheaper and hopefully more affordable for the smaller game developers who will now have a chance to build quality games for the PS3.

Sony should follow the lead of some other company and offer the development kit for free.
