Sony goes on Treasure Hunt

Monday, November 26th, 2007

Ahh, if only Johnny Depp’s character, Captain Jack Sparrow, only knew about Sony’s plans for a treasure hunt…

The game Sony had envisioned was a pager based system, in which you would receive information on your pager and you would then go on a quest to find the location, respond back, and get information to head to another locations until you reach the end.

Read the PDF for the Sony Patent.

The game which some of you might say is similar to Geocaching might find it interesting to note that Sony had applied for the patent back in 1997 and received approval in Aug. 1999.

Wikipedia shows that the creation of the Geacaching game was created on May. 03, 2000.

What’s truly more interesting is the mention of Letterboxing, which used references to landmarks and clues embedded into stories which is 150 years old!

AMD unleashes Spider to the masses

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

Remember this picture?

Sapphire - World Cyber Games 2007, originally uploaded by jonjon_01.

It was a picture of the Sapphire System that was being demoed at the World Cyber Games 2007, in Seattle.

AMD has made an announcement, back in Nov. 19, 2007, that they are releasing the Spider system.

The Spider system is the first PC platform to run all AMD systems, from processor, to graphics!

  1. AMD Phenom 9000 Series Quad-Core Processor: For phenomenal performance.
  2. ATI Radeon HD™  HD 3800 Series: For HD graphics.
  3. AMD 7-Series Chipsets: For scalability and support of HyperTransport 3.0, PCI Express 2.0, and native quad-graphics supporting up to 4 graphics cards.

I guess this is what the rep at WCG was talking about.

Sony denies PSP mobile phone

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

Sony reps are now stating that the Indian Economic Times misquoted Jim Ryans about the possibility of a PSP mobile phone.

What’s interesting is that Sony Computers Entertainment Europe is working with BT to provide a VOIP-based phone, text, and video services to the PSP devices for European market.

You can read more about it at Strategy Eye.

Of course, you can make VOIP calls with your PSP, right now, if this You Tube vid is correct…

Note that the call is made with the PSP but it uses your regular phone to make local or international calls.

As advertised Xbox 360 sale at Circuit City

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

I needed a break from work so I took a quick trip to Circuit City around 10:30AM today.

The line at the game section was still pretty long. I heard an irate lady and her daughter at the counter arguing about the advertisement.

A quick look showed they were purchasing a Xbox 360, Guitar Hero II, some games, and a wireless control unit

The problem was that Circuit City was telling the customer that the wireless unit was not free. (It wasn’t part of the bundle.)

The sales rep was trying to explain that they ran out of the bundled units that were for sale for the Black Friday special.

The customer pointed to the ad and started to argue that the ad did not mention any such thing about limited supplies or quantities available in the ad.

I snagged an available Circuit City ad on my way out and scanned through the ads. Sure enough, there is nothing mentioned in the ad about quantities or limited supplies.

Who is right; the customer or the sales rep?

Watch TV on your Nintendo DS

DS TV

Nintendo quietly started offering the 1Seg TV for DS on Nov. 20, 2007 and it quickly crashed their servers as orders started to pour in for the nifty gadget that would let you view TV on the DS.

The unit costs $6,800 yen and offers some interesting features such as change channels, control volume on the other screen, temporarily stop the picture and write memos. The other screen provides unique features such as “travel on television” which certain areas of a tv picture can be automatically recorded and put on the map of Japan. The “Tsubo TV” which helps with massage points for tired eyes (?) and “TV-yan” which shows a character that watches TV with you so you don’t feel alone when you watch TV.You will need to go to Nintendo Japans site to order the 1Seg TV for DS.

Intel speeds up your game

Monday, November 12th, 2007

Intel has just announced 16 microprocessors for the server and high end pc users.

The microprocessors are based on the new 45-nanometer chips, which at this time are called Penryn, and is expected to increase performance boost for server-side business applications, graphics, and video editing.

Now that AMD has launched their quad-core called “Barcelona” back in September, I expect another big announcement by AMD to beat Intel’s Penryn within 3 months.
